Exhausts have many purposes and are on all vehicles whether they are petrol, diesel or even hydrogen powered. It is a way of the engine getting rid of the unwanted elements. For the petrol and diesel engines it is all the Co2 emissions and for the hydrogen engines it is the water and condensation that leaves through the exhaust.

An exhaust normally comprises of a few different sections: a manifold, a catalytic converter, a mid section and a back box. The manifold is what connects to the engine itself and with a four-cylinder engine you will have a four-branch manifold. The catalytic converter is what manages and reduces some of the emissions of the engine and is considered very important for the environment. Then finally you have the mid section and the back box, which control backpressure and also controls the noise that will be produced from the exhaust. Most back boxes will contain silencers and resonators, which reduce the noise pollution.

There are many cases of people upgrading their exhaust systems, this can be for a multitude of things, from increasing the brake horse power to just making it sound louder. They tend to be made from stainless steel because as you know this will never rust and also comes up very shiny to add to the aesthetics of the vehicle. Some well known manufacturers of performance exhausts would be: Mongoose, Mountune, Milltek, Piper and Sportex but there are many more out there.  It is also possible to get custom made exhausts from the smaller private firms out there such as Pipecraft. You simply explain what you want and how you would like it to sound and they make the exhaust to suit.
