Gearboxes

Gearboxes are in all cars and they use cogs and gear ratios to turn a revving engine into a moving car. They are an essential part to the car and each gearbox will be different for the different types of car. The ratio of the gears is one of the components of a car that determines how quick a car accelerates and the range of speed that it can get to. The gearbox then distributes the driving force to the driveshaft which leads to the hub and this is what is attached to the wheel and gets the car to move. There are all different types of gearboxes including fully automatic, sequential, tip-tronic and then the common manual gearbox. You then also have varying amounts of gears ranging from 4 speed in older cars to 7 or 8 speed in modern performance cars. They all have different combinations and are set up to suit the engine that they are matched up with.

Gearboxes can be very expensive when bought new or even when they are reconditioned so it is normally always best to go to a breakers yard and get a good second hand part. They tend to be priced a lot more reasonably and can be just as good as new. In order for your gearbox to last and be reliable you need to make sure that the transmission oil/ fluid is regularly checked and topped up. Without the oil there is no lubrication and it is just metal on metal which creates friction and heat. This is when cogs and components within the gearbox start to overheat and warp.
